Colts disfigure Knights 83-66, Pacesetters progress to 2-0

Bounty Colts completed a resounding 17-point win against Nirva Knights, while Trinity Grid Holding (TGH) Pacsetters racked up their second win during the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association first division Super League on Burnham Court Sunday night.

Two emphatic transition dunks by Colts’ guard Shelroy Thomas was an indication of how Colts dominated their opponents Sunday night.

Colts, who have returned to their winning ways of yesteryear after acquiring a hand full of new players, blew away Knights in the first half before switching to cruise control and giving their bench reserves some playing time.

Colts guards Dave Causway, and brothers Sheldon and Shelroy Thomas, assaulted the Knights in the backcourt in the first half with several steals that they converted into fast-break points on the other end.

The Colts guards engaged a whole court press early and managed to prevent the Knights from advancing the ball over the half-court line on several occasions.

The new Colts’ fast pace game, driven by their trio of Kwakwani-native guards, was effective on both ends of the court through the first two quarters.

Before they checked out of the game later in the second half, Shelroy Thomas registered a team leading 21-point performance while Causway netted 17 and Sheldon Thomas swished in 15.

Colts power forward Marvin Hilliman also had a productive night on the offensive end with 14 points. Owan Walton had a game high of 22 points for the Knights who were without their injured guard Kester Gomes who coached instead. Former Ravens small forward Devon Bacchus was tightly guarded by Colts and only managed 13 points.

TGH Pacesetter completed an impressive victory against Pepsi Sonics 73-55 despite trailing by 10 points in the second quarter. Pacesetters fell prey to Mark Agard’s Pepsi Sonics whole court defensive lockdown and coughed up the ball on several occasions. Sonics dynamic small forward Jason Squires stepped up and drilled three first half three pointers to help his team go ahead before Pacesetters coach Robert Cadogan called a game changing timeout.

Pacesetters returned to the court and made the adjustments that led to an 8-0 run before Sonics found the bottom of the net again. Pacesetters locked up on Squires who finished with 22 points and forced other players like Trevor Scott, Bevon Spooner (seven points) and Marlando Mickel(11 points) to step up and make big shots.

On offensive Pacesetters explosive guard Travis Burnett continue to penetrate but instead of looking to score all the time as he did in the first half, Burnett made found his teammates and help Pacesetter regain their offensive rhythm. Pacesetters three point marksman Stephon Gillis found his form at the right time to spread the defense late in the game. Gillis drilled four three pointers during his 22 point performance.  Burnett finished with 13 points while forwards Royston Siland and Kurt Elias added 14 and 10 points respectively.

In the third division encounter Eagles guard Neil Gordon took over in the second half to catapult his team to a 76-70 win against the Demerara Colours Panthers.  Gordon finished with 19 points while Courtney Taylor who was instrumental in creating offense for the Eagles in the first half scored 11. Panthers guard Jonathon Pooran penetrated effectively and capitalised on several fast-break opportunity to score 29 points in futility. The league continues tomorrow.
