Nine teams to compete in Hikers seven-a-side hockey festival

Some nine teams are set to participate in tomorrow’s Hikers Hockey Club inaugural seven-a-side mixed hockey festival at the St. Stanislaus ground, Carifesta Avenue

The tournament, which was officially launched Thursday at Antonio’s Grille, will get underway at 9am this morning.
Hikers’ president Devin Munroe said that apart from promoting the development of hockey in Guyana, the initiative is intended to promote entertainment and friendly competition amongst most of the nation’s male and female players while seeking to generate much needed funds for the club.

“This tournament is an innovative concept as it will feature both male and female players from different clubs competing together. One of the unique rules is that there must be three female players on the field at all times.”

“Nine individually sponsored mixed teams from different clubs will compete in two groups while playing in a round robin format. The top two teams from each will advance to the semi-finals,” added Munroe.

Senior member of the Hikers team Alana McCullock in brief words avowed “It’s gonna be great fun in the sun, it’s a hockey bonding day and the tournament will provide added exposure for the juniors and persons who have not seen hockey in awhile.”

Primary sponsors of the event Stag Beer, through their brand representative John Maikoo, said: “Stag is always happy to be sponsors to such events. It’s the first time Stag will sponsor an initiative like this and I envision a long term partnership.”

Munroe in closing said: “It’s not just about playing hockey; it’s about building camaraderie and coming together as a family. Appreciation must be given to our primary sponsor Stag Beer through Ansa McAl and our nine other team sponsors Antonio’s Grille, Diamond Mineral Water, Colours, EMTEC, German’s Restaurant, Global Technology, Jai Signs, Pepsi and Wood Pecker Products.

“Thanks must also be given to the Guyana Hockey Board for working with us on this event and to the St. Stanislaus High School board and head teacher for allowing us to use their facility and lastly the management Antonio’s Grille for letting us use their premises today.”
