GTM U-19 cricket competition pushed back one week

The 2013 Inter-County Three-Day Under-19 Competition sponsored by Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Fire & Life Insurance Companies (GTM) in collaboration with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has been pushed back one week owing to persistent inclement weather.

A press release from the GCB confirmed stoppage of the competition which had been scheduled to start on Wednesday, could not because the continuous showers turned one of the venues, Everest Cricket Club ground into a swamp.

The match between the GCB President’s XI and Berbice was slated as one of the two first matches to be played on Wednesday but not a ball was bowled due to the weather.

Over at Wales on the same day Demerara and Essequibo managed to get one hour of action before the rains came again.

Batting first, Demerara reached 36 for 3 at stumps. Andrew Gibson top scored with 11. Fast bowler Kemo Paul grabbed 2 for 19 in that period of play.

As such, the organisers and sponsors have decided to push the tournament back a week in hope that the weather changes.

The selection of the National Under-19 team depends on this competition. If there is no on-field play, the selectors and players would be at a disadvantage; as a result it is still to be decided if the Competition will start over or continue.

Players from the respective teams were present at the Everest ground yesterday in anticipation of play but the consistent showers ensured that the second day was abandoned.

This is the 36th year that insurance giant GTM is sponsoring the competition, which has produced the likes of Guyanese/West Indies stars Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan. It also marks the longest period of sponsorship of sports in the Caribbean.
