Khalil receives scare from Meckdeci

Former Caribbean U17 squash champion Jason Ray Khalil received a scare from Ben Meckdeci Thursday night at the Georgetown Club Courts when the
Guyana Squash Association in collaboration with its number one corporate sponsor Digicel ran off night three of its National Junior Squash tournament sponsored by Woodpecker Products Limited.

Khalil jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead against the former Caribbean Under 13 champion Mekdeci.

Khalil won the first game 11-7 and the second 11-5 but on this night the victory would not come easy as Meckdeci clawed his way back into the match by winning the third 11-4 and after leading 6-1 and 8-5, had two game balls to take the match into a fifth and deciding final game but could not win that final point as Khalil won the fourth game 15-13.

Nyron Joseph had a clinical win over Avinash Odit with scores being 11-2,11-9,11-4 but Steven Joseph the other top player in this group had to work extra hard to dispose of Alec Melville 11-8,11-6,9-11, 11-8.

The top two Under 19 girls Caribbean Under 19 Champion Mary Fung A fat and Caribbean Under 19 Runner up Ashley de Groot continued to impress with straight set victories over their opponents. Mary disposed of Larissa Wiltshire 11-0,11-4,11-2 and Ashley had a slightly more difficult time in beating Taylor Fernandes 11-7,11-8,11-4.

The other top match of the night featured two Under 13 Boys Shomari Wiltshire and Alex Cheeks.

In the first game Shomari raced out to an early nine three lead only for Alex to buckle down and reel off the next eight points to take the first game 11-9. In the second Shomari again raced out to an early seven one lead but again Alex fought back got to as close as six then Shomari got to ten before Alex got to as close as nine before Shomari closed out the game 11-9. Both players were really playing excellent squash and the third game was no different as Alex this time had game ball at ten nine before Shomari won the next three points to win the game 12-10. In the fourth game Shomari again jumped out to an early lead before Alex again forced his way back into the game but this time could never get ahead and Shomari closed out the game and match 11-9.
