Alpha United’s 8-0 mauling of Amelia’s Ward marred by ground concerns

Alpha United mauled Amelia’s Ward United 8-0 as action in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Super League Season 2012/2013 continued at the Wisburg Secondary School ground, Linden on Sunday.

Captain Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams gave Alpha the early lead through a 32nd minute effort which was quickly doubled in the 38th minute when Dwight Peters converted.

On the resumption of the second half, midfield playmaker Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant inked his name on the scorer’s sheet with a 56th minute strike and duly completed his brace in the 74th minute.

Mercurial winger Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson the found the back of the net in the 61st minute while further goals from forward Mervin Joseph in the 77th minute and defensive midfielder Anthony ‘Natural’ Benfield in the 82nd and 87th minutes completed the one-sided encounter.

In a post match comment victorious head coach Wayne `Wiggy’ Dover stated “Honestly the venue is not conducive to football at this level and is really a health hazard to the players. It’s sad to know that our footballers are asked to compete at this venue and we will be submitting a report on the ground to the relevant authority to ensure we don’t have to play on venues like this again.
He added:”Never-the-less we competed.

We began slowly as the players were very cautious in the first half while the second half was better as we focused on more of a direct approach. Overall it was a good showing.”

In the earlier fixture Milerock FC compliments of first half goals from Dominique Babb and Clarence Huggins in the eight and 14th minutes respectively defeated BK Western Tigers 2-0.

In Berbice West Demerara outfit Den Amstel defeated home side Blairmont Community Centre (BCC) Rosignol United 2-1.
