Guyana celebrates World Challenge Day

World Challenge Day celebrated its day of fitness yesterday with the rest of the world by hosting its sixth annual event filled with various exercises and physical demonstrations held at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence operating under the theme “Fitness for Life”.

World Challenge Day is observed around the world on May 22 each year, where participants commit themselves to a work out of at least 30 minutes. The aim of this is to target improved healthy lifestyles by keeping one’s self physically, mentally and spiritually fit.

Activities such as martial arts, boxing among other forms of physical exercises were exhibited by members of the Guyana Police Force, students from the National School of Dance, and a few of the country’s top fitness trainers and instructors.

Present at the event was Director of Sport Neil Kumar who said that this year’s turnout was the biggest since the event was first celebrated six years ago in Guyana.

In an invited comment Kumar stated:”I’m very thankful for the support and would like to thank the schools and teachers on behalf of the National Sports Commission who came out to make this event a huge success.”

The activities got underway with an intense workout choreographed by Sports Conditioning Trainer of Genesis Fitness Express Mrs Noshavyah King, who was eventually backed up by students of School of the Nations who exhibited jump rope techniques as a part of the programme.

Also on hand was local fitness instructor Curtis McKenzie who put on displays of aerobic workouts which included simple dance moves which he said will keep the “blood flowing and heart pumping”.

The fundamentals of cricket were coordinated by Yadram and Daniel  Richmond who used three young players to exhibit warm up techniques followed by the importance of good batting posture which allow players to play correct strokes.

Boxing techniques were taught by National Boxing coach, Wincel Thomas while the Guyana Police Force displayed physical feats of fitness for the crowd in attendance.

Kumar encouraged Guyanese to be health conscious and keep fit saying “fitness is very important and we need to make it an integral part of our lives”.
