Lumumba to resign over behavior of GFA vice president

New Georgetown Football Association (GFA) General Secretary and Alpha United president Odinga Lumumba says he will resign from the post as soon as the association finds a replacement citing the offensive conduct of GFA Vice President Mark Phillips as the cause.

In a letter dated May 22nd 2013 to GFA President Vernon Burnett and copied to the secretaries of the 16 clubs under the association’s banner, the Presidential Advisor on Empowerment stated:“First I would like to thank the General Council for electing me Secretary of the GFA on Saturday May 18th 2013. However, the abusive behavior of Vice President Mr. Mark Phillips towards Mr. Vernon Burnett President and Mr. Rawle Adams Vice President of the GFA has caused me to have second thoughts.

“I therefore, recommend that at the earliest General Council Meeting the Association should find a new General Secretary who has the capacity, patience and the durability to deal with the likes of Mr. Phillips. In essence I have given you a choice as it relates to this matter and my resignation will go into immediate effect as soon as you find a new General Secretary,” he stated.

However Phillips in an invited comment said that Lumumba should be the last person to say that he was abusive when on two separate occasions Lumumba himself has been abusive.

Phillips stated that Adams attacked him first stating how ignorant and uneducated he was and that the GFA only accommodates his presence.

“I told him he is only reminding me because when my mother sent me to school, I was in the alley pelting birds and catching fish.

“Lumumba was there as quiet as a church mouse and at the end of the argument he said ‘it seem like Mark Phillips has a personal problem with me’.

“I said I don’t have a problem with him and that I have a problem with how the matter was dealt with. Mr. Lumumba further said he is going to resign from the position.”
