Khan, George spearhead swim team for B/dos international meet

A combined club team of swimmers Joseph Seguina, Onika George, Accalia Khan, Joseph De Nobrega and Leon Seaton Jr. departed yesterday to compete at this weekend’s 22nd Aquatic Centre International swim meet in Barbados.

The swimmers are expected to strive for new personal best times in their respective events at the FINA approved meet which will allow the swimmers an opportunity to attain the FINA Barcelona Worlds standard.

The meet will be held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, St. Michael.

GASA Secretary, Dee George told Stabroek Sport that the meet will allow the swimmers the opportunity to strengthen their performance.

“This is all in keeping with their development,” she stated.

Onika George of Silver Sharks Aquatic Swim Club (SSASC) will swim in the girls’ 13-14 50 LC metre backstroke event. George enters the event with a seed time of 33.31 seconds, the fastest time ahead of Alexis Clarke and Hannah Gill of PIRAT (Barbados) who are ranked second and third with 34.32 seconds and 35.85 seconds respectively.

The Bishops’ High School student is also registered in two other events, the 100m and 50m freestyle while her schoolmate, Khan, will also compete in same events.

Seaton Jr. is ranked number one in the boys’ 8 years and under 50 LC metre breast stroke with a seed time of 37.93 seconds.  The Aquatic Centre will also see him in four other events, the 100 and 200 metre freestyle, and 50m backstroke and freestyle events.

De Nobrega will face orders in the boys’ 13-14 100m and 50m freestyle events while Seguina will compete in four events, 50m backstroke, butterfly, freestyle and 100m freestyle.

George said that she believes that the five-member team will make Guyana proud.

“They are very energized and in very good spirits,” she said.

The team with the exception of Joseph, will return on Monday and prepare for the August 16-18 Goodwill Games which will be held in neighbouring Suriname.
