GAPF to stage Intermediate, Masters c/ships Sunday

The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation will stage its annual Intermediate and Masters Championships on Sunday at the University of Guyana Campus.

According to a release, as the federation continues to develop its lifter base, this year’s championships seek to showcase the improved talents of the lifters who competed at the Novices Championships New Amsterdam earlier this year.

Sunday’s meet will also give the lifters who failed or who were late at the Novices another chance at redemption.

The Fitness Revolution Gym of East Coast will challenge for top honours with the ladies expected to dominate their category through Novices Best lifter overall Natoya Robinson along with gym mates Chittra Ramlochan and Shenella Austin.

Male lifters Deon Dutt who did not complete his lift at the Novices is expected to challenge Best lifter overall Marino Jeffrey of Power House Gym for top honours leading into the Senior Nationals.

The Masters Championships features the exciting match up of World Masters Two Champion and dead lift record holder Winston “Little Master” Stoby against the 2011 World Masters One Bronze medalist and 2009 Pan American open heavyweight gold medalist John “Big John” Edwards.

Stoby and Edwards will be using the event to warm up for the upcoming Pan American Championships as well as the World Masters Championships later in the year.

Fast on their heels and aiming to upset is dark horse the indefatigable Errol “Powder for Power” Henry.

Guest lifters Osmond Mack and Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney will be on show with all eyes on ‘Mr. Clean’ as he executes the squat under the scrutiny of the judges to fine tune the remedial work on his squat technique which caused him to fail at two previous International Championships.

Meanwhile, National and Caribbean Women Champion Dawn Barker also slated to guest lift has been withdrawn from the National team as a result of a recent medical examination confirming her knee injury not being fully healed. Ongoing Physiotherapy has been recommended for Barker in the hope she will be fully recovered in time for the Senior Championships in November. Kimberly Mars – Loncke now carries the sole women’s hopes on her shoulders.
