Contracts signed, GBBC ProAm card set for CASH return at month end

The contracts are signed, the boxers are ready for fistic fury and the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) Pro Am initiative will return to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on June 28.

Following revelations that renovations to the floor of the venue will be completed in three weeks, the 28th edition of the Guyana Fight Night card which was postponed last month became official yesterday with the professional boxers affixing their signatures to their respective contracts at the Abdool and Abdool Building.

The card is scheduled to be headlined by Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese, Dexter Gonsalves (5-1, 2, 2 KOs) and Barbadian Revlon Lake (6-8, 2, 1 KO) after the initial main bout between Guyana’s heavyweight champion, Kurt Bess and Barbados’ knockout specialist, Shawn ‘The Sniper’ Cox (17-1, 16 KOs) was shelved because of Cox’s title fight next month.

The 38-year-old south paw Cox is scheduled to face South African Danie Venter (15-6, 11 KOs) for the vacant Commonwealth cruiserweight title in South Africa next month.

One clause in Cox’s contract states that he cannot face any opponent eight weeks prior to his July ring date.

Gonsalves and Lake will be matching gloves for the local junior lightweight title. Lake, the former national lightweight champion, is on a three-fight losing streak while Gonzales has not fought since 2009.

Both boxers will be looking to resuscitate their respective careers. An all out brawl is envisioned.

The undercard will feature debutants Romeo Norville and Laured ‘Nightmare’ Stewart. Norville will face Eversley Brown in a four-round middleweight contest while Stewart will take on Anson Green in a welterweight match which is also scheduled for four rounds.

Troy Lewis (4-16, 1, 2 KOs) will also make his return to the ring; he will face the hard-hitting Berbician, Kelsey George in a four-round super middleweight rematch. Lewis defeated the Berbician in his debut bout in September 2011.

George (0-6) will be aiming to turn the tables on Lewis and record his first professional victory while Lewis will be looking for his fifth win since turning pro in 1999.

Names of the pugilists who will make up the amateur segment of the card will be announced subsequently.

The monthly card is an initiative of the GBBC in collaboration with the Sports Ministry and the National Communications Network (NCN).

Sponsors of the event include Digicel, Giftland Office Max, Courts, Banks DIH Limited and ANSA McAL.

Admission is $1,000 while children will be asked to pay half price. Bell time is 20:00 hrs.
