Richmond stages cricket clinic for East Bank schools

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) held a one day cricket clinic yesterday at the Agricola Basketball court, East Bank Demerara, with the hope of revamping the sport in school systems across Guyana.

The clinic targeted students from schools on the East Bank which included Eccles Primary, Covent Garden Primary, Houston Primary and Success Elementary School.

The age of the students ranged from 12 to 14 years old and MCYS and NSC organiser and cricket coach, Daniel Richmond, carried out the batting, bowling and fielding sessions with assistance from teachers of the respective schools.

“The aim of these clinics is to teach young school kids the basic skills of the sport in terms of batting, bowling and fielding.

Also, we are aiming to teach them the importance of staying fit and active,” he told this newspaper yesterday.

He said that he was pleased by the support he received from students and teachers alike and indicated that weather permitting, the clinics will continue next week at the same venue but will be extended to three days.

“The school level needs to be rebuilt and schools need to reiterate cricket as a part of their curriculum.

Also, more coaches are needed in the schools to ensure that this is done correctly,” he added.

Facilitators will now turn their attention tomorrow when schools from Unity to Cane Grove, which were already coached by Richmond, will take part in a boys and girls’ U12 competition at Helena, Mahaica.
