Sent in, Derbyshire gathered 321 for five from their allotted overs – their highest ever one-day score – with the 38-year-old Chanderpaul top scoring with 85 off just 69 deliveries.

In reply, Essex were dismissed for 258 in the 34th over, with Mark Pettini hitting 88.

The victory was only Derbyshire’s second in five outings, and they lie fourth in Group B on six points.

They were given a flying start by Leeward Islands left-hander Chesney Hughes who blasted four boundaries in 17 off 11 balls before falling lbw to veteran seamer David Masters in the third over.

Opener Wes Durston then dominated with 71 off 46 balls, with seven fours and five sixes, propelling the scoring in a stand of 91 for the second wicket with Paul Borrington (19).

Both fell in successive overs to leave Derbyshire on 116 for three in the 16th, and it was left to Chanderpaul to provide momentum for the innings.

He smashed five fours and two sixes as he put on 78 for the fourth wicket with Wayne Madsen who hit a run-a-ball 33.
