Martinique upsets Canada

PASADENA, CA,  CMC – Substitute Fabrice Reuperne scored a late winner to give Caribbean side Martinique a 1-0 victory over Canada in Group A of the opening game of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup Tournament yesterday.

Reuperne’s left-foot volley, two minutes into extra time, stunned the Canadians who fielded a very young side.

But Reuperne made up for his missed penalty kick against Canada which booted them out of the quarter-finals in 2002.

Martinique is one of four Caribbean teams chasing the Gold Cup Tournament which is being played across venues in the United States.

Cuba, reigning Caribbean Cup champion, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago are also vying for honours in the July 7-28 tournament.
