Uncertainty surrounds start of female Inter-County competition

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior female Inter-County limited overs cricket tournament is set to bowl off today but so far only one county Demerara has named its representative squad.

As previously reported in this newspaper West Indies player June Ann Ogle has been named skipper of the Demerara team which will be managed by Orin Bailey and coached by Mayleen Ramdular.

The top female cricketers from across the three counties, Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice are set to undergo three days of competitive 50 overs-a-side cricket from today at the Everest Cricket Club ground.

The tournament is expected to feature a mixture of youthful, experienced and talented players who are expected to showcase their talents for their respective counties but up to press time yesterday Berbice had not yet released their squad while Essequibo was yet to confirm their playing 11 although a source told Stabroek Sport yesterday that they will be participating in the tournament despite the uncertainty of who will be in the final 11.

Former national cricketer, Andre Percival, who has been named coach of the Berbice female team yesterday told Stabroek Sport that the West Indies  duo of Tremayne Smartt and all–rounder Shemaine Campbell, who both who represented the West Indies in the women’s World Cup held in Sri Lanka, will definitely represent Berbice along with other uncapped female players.

Percival has just returned from Trinidad and Tobago where he was coach of a female U19 team which competed in a small invitational T20 tournament staged by the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), which was contested from July 18-21, 2013 in which featured Barbados, St Lucia and the hosts Trinidad.

With regards to the inter-county tournament, Percival stated that the team will be “looking forward to stick to the basics and playing smart cricket.”

Demerara will definitely bank heavily on Ogle who could play key roles at the top of the order and behind the stumps.
