Albion 2013 cricket academy starting Monday

The Albion Community Centre Cricket Club will be staging their 2013 cricket academy from August 19 to 24 in Berbice, with aims of developing the ancient county’s next stars.

As part of the Cricket Development Programme for year 2013, the club is in the process of planning the cricket academy beginning Monday at the Albion Community Centre Ground.

Over 100 young cricketers are expected to be part of this academy which will see the youngsters being exposed to high quality cricket coaching and lectures on topics such as leadership, discipline, importance of education, physical fitness, nutrition, HIV/AIDS etc.

Coordinators for the academy include: Orvin Mangru, Powan Baldeo and Kandasammy Surujnarine, while prospective cricketers will be under the watchful eyes of Albion’s head coach, André Percival, with assistance from former West Indies players and current national batsmen Sewnarine Chattergoon, Anthony Bramble and Jonathan Foo.

The club which partakes in all levels of cricket organised by the Berbice and Guyana Cricket Boards – First Division, Second Division, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21 and Under-23, is currently one of the best cricket clubs in Guyana and has developed the reputation over the years as being the nursery of Berbice’s cricket.

Apart from dominating in various competitions at all levels, including six national first division titles, the club has also been producing top quality cricketers, some of whom have gone on to represent Berbice, Guyana and the West Indies at all levels.

West Indies cricketers Narsingh Deonarine, Chattergoon, Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul together with West Indies ‘A’ team, National 20/20 player Foo, are all members of the club’s first division team, while several other prominent names in Berbice and Guyana’s cricket such as Gudakesh Motie, Kandasammy Surujnarine and Sharaz Ramcharran are also part of the Albion club.

Albion also has one of the best nursery programmes in the country averaging almost seventy young cricketers within the ages of eight to 18 currently being involved in regular physical and net sessions.
