Pele ousts Fruta Conquerors from Goal for Gold tournament

Pele Football Club on Sunday defeated Fruta Conquerors 3-1 in the Slingerz/National Association for Women Football (NAWF) Goal for Gold tournament at the Blairmont Community Centre ground, Berbice.

Played under wet conditions Pele broke the deadlock in the most fortuitous of manner through a Leon Fredericks eighth-minute strike.

Receiving the ball just outside the 18 yard area, Fredericks sent a tame right-footed strike that went between the legs of the young Conquerors’  custodian Alex Klinkio in his debut game.

Keoma Gravesande doubled Pele’s lead in the 24th minute through an audacious right-footed free kick from just over the half way line that flew right over the hands of Klinkio and nestled into the top left hand corner of the net.

Conquerors allowed another goal in the 76th minute when Okeene Fraser headed home from the right side corner.

Jermaine Junior, though, salvaged some pride for the Tucville side as he found the back of the net in the 95th minute with a simple right-footed tap in inside the six yard area from a Dwayne Lawrence right side cross.

Victorious captain Shemroy Arthur during an invited comment stated:”It was a good game; It’s not the Pele of before. We lost a few senior players and we have a young team now that we are building.”

Losing Captain Junior stated:”We didn’t play firm. The players forgot what they got to do. We didn’t start with the right midfield.”

In the other contest, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) defeated home side BCC Rosignol United 5-3 in extra time after regulation time found the scores locked 3-3.

Delroy Fraser led the home side with a brace in the 35th and 64th minutes while Justin Collins netted  the third goal in the 65th minute.

Eusi ‘Bony Man’ Phillips led the army with a double in the 74th and 110th minutes while Bedford Williams, Warren Gilkes and Sherwyn Lawson each found the back of the net in the 60th, 74th and 112th minutes respectively.
