Lucrative seventh annual Guyana Cup on today at P/Mourant

The seventh annual Guyana Cup horse racing event is set to take place today at the Port Mourant Turf Club, Corentyne, Berbice.

The meet is a collaborative effort between Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Racing stables and the Port Mourant Turf Club.

With some $34m in prizes and 110 horses entered, the turfites are expected to throng the venue for what is arguably the largest sporting event at this time.

However, reports reaching this newspaper indicate that A class horse Scores’ Even will not be competing forcing the organisers replace the

‘A’ class event with a D1 race over the same distance.

Some 14 of the top horses are down to participate in the B class event along with a few new imports which has at stake $7M in cash and prizes for the 1500m race, the largest ever for a single event in Guyana

The winner will receive $3.5m and the Guyana Cup trophy and the hosts   Jumbo Jet Stables, seem determined to let the money stay with them.

They lead the entries with five horses including Grande Roja, Who’s on the Case, Got to Go, Marathon Man and the just imported Blame the Jockey and Africanize.

Also in the reckoning are the Elcock and the P&P Syndicate Stables which will have previous winners Donut Prince, The Message, Prince Charming and the still acclimatizing C.P Got Even all looking ready to go.

The Sheriff Stable will bring to the event California Strike, Settle In Seattle and Swing Easy while defending champion, Elle’s Vision of the Jagdeo stable and the just imported Force Entry of the Kishan Bacchus Stable could spring a few surprises.

The top individual performers will also receive prizes.

Last minute entries can be communicated to Chandu Ramkissoon (624-9063 or 232-0633), Kris Jagdeo (624-6123; 322-0369), Rajendra (Jim–Jo) 618-7278, Ramnauth 337-5311, Romel Jagroop (624-1798) and Compton Sancho 690-0569. The coordinator is Nasrudeen (Jumbo Jet) Mohamed.

The event is set to get underway at noon.
