Shewdass could create history today

Guyana’s Pan American Gold Medalist power lifter Gumendra Shewdas (Sub junior/U18) will taking to the World stage today at the World Championships in Killeen Texas USA where he is favoured to create history by winning the event.

Shewdass is the early favourite by virtue of having a total of 497.5kgs to nearest challenger Dalton La Coe of the USA’s 455kgs. If all goes according

to form it should be a straight fight between the two and barring any unforeseen circumstances and should Shewdass hold his nerve, he stands as good a chance as any of becoming Guyana’s first ever junior World Champion in any of the established disciplines contested by this country.

Shewdass is currently the national, Caribbean and Commonwealth record holder in the squat (197.5kg), dead lift (207.5kg) and total (497.5kg)

Shewdass, who will compete in the 53kg sub junior category (U/18), is being coached by Egbert Jackson of Total Fitness Gym, Corriverton. Jackson is considered by many as the driving force behind the success of juniors Suraj Shewdas, 2013 Pan American Bronze medalists Fabian Ketwaroo (66.0kg) and Anis Ade Thomas (83.0kg) who are all members of his gym.

They are accompanied by Denroy Livan the public relations officer and organising secretary of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) who will be functioning in the dual capacity of manager/coach.
