Fruta Conquerors pip arch rival Camptown 1-0

Fruta Conquerors defeated arch rivals Camptown 1-0 when action in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Georgetown Zone Playoffs continued at the Tucville Community Centre ground on Sunday.

In what could be described as a cagey affair, nippy forward Dwayne Lawrence broke Camptown hearts as he found the back of the net with the very last attacking possession in the 92nd minute.

Utilizing his searing pace to latch onto a 15 yard pass from winger Jomo Hinds, Lawrence through his deft footwork evaded his centre half marker before toe poking the ball under the advancing custodian Oswald Cornette to spark wild celebrations.

In a fixture of few clear cut chances, Conquerors would be given a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 30th minute following a tackle on Lawrence in the penalty area.

Stepping up to take the spot kick, captain Jermaine Junior would be denied by Cornette as the Campbellville shot stopper pulled off an excellent save low to his left to keep his side levelled going into the half.

Camptown looked much more organized in the second stanza and almost came close to taking the lead in the 65th minute through a 35 yard right footed Leon Muir screamer that was tipped onto the upright by the Conquerors keeper.

Victorious coach Sampson Gilbert in a post match comment said “It was a highly competitive game. Both teams knew the necessity of winning and it came down to the team who executed their plan better”.

“Finishing continues to be a liability. We are working on it as we did squander a few opportunities. The team knew a win was important and we fought for 90 minutes” added Gilbert.

In the mid-card fixture, BK Western Tigers led by a second half Hubert Pedro double in the 62nd and 78th minutes defeated Riddim Squad 3-1. Pedro’s younger sibling Randolph Wagner opened the scoring for the West Ruimveldt side in the 43rd minute.

On target in a losing effort was Amos Ramsay in the 45th minute. In the opening encounter of the triple header, Pele FC and Santos played to a nil-all draw.

Action continues on Wednesday at the same venue with a doubleheader. In the opening game, Fruta Conquerors will oppose Santos FC while Riddim Squad will tackle Camptown FC in the feature game at 20:00hrs.
