Su, Britton-Grant lead Chess qualifiers

Former national junior champion Haifeng Su and Omar Britton Grant are joint leaders in the Diamond Mineral Water junior chess tournament after three rounds were completed on Sunday at the Guyana Legion Hall on Carifesta Avenue.

The two players, who are on the maximum three points, easily disposed of their three opponents and will face off in the fourth round.

Some 12 players are competing in the tournament which the Guyana Chess federation will use as a qualification for the national Closed junior championships later this year.

The top seven finishers will qualify to enter the 2013 national junior championship and will join defending champion Anthony Drayton.

The qualification tournament will conclude on October 5 at the same venue.

In the second position with two points is the tournament’s lone female competitor Sheriffa Ali while Saeed Ali, Joshua Pedro, Davion Mars, Roberto Neto and Trenton Bennett are all on one-and-a-half points respectively for joint third.
Occupying joint fourth position with one point are Rashard Hussain and Alexander Brassington.
