Newcomer Shanella Webster on Saturday won the second annual President’s Cup golf tournament at the Lusignan Golf Club.
Webster won from Chatterpaul Deo with Andre Cummings third, Vijay Deo fourth and William Walker fifth.
Walker won the Best gross prize, Mohanlall Dinnanauth, the Longest Drive and Patrick Prashad the Nearest to the Pin.
Over 45 players including five females participated in the tournament which was declared open by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport; Dr. Frank Anthony who deputized for His Excellency President Donald Ramotar who was unavailable.
Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Indranauth Haroldsingh,
in brief remarks apologized for the absence of the Minister of Tourism Irfaan Ali.
He also thanked the Lusignan Golf Club for having the tournament on their calendar of events pointing out that the club had staged 34 tournaments over the past year, which he deemed a significant achievement for the sport.
Dr. Anthony suggested that the club advertise its calendar of events to the major hotels since the sport now attracts businessmen and women on holiday and vacation here in Guyana.
David Mohammed, vice president of the LGC, expressed thanks to the ministry and President Ramotar for the second sponsorship of the tournament adding that he had noticed an increase in participation from the inaugural tournament last year.
