Five member team to depart tomorrow for C/bean cycling c/ships

A five-man team of national riders spearheaded by this season’s most successful wheelsman, Alanzo Greaves and National Road Race Champion, Raynauth Jeffrey will depart for Curacao tomorrow to compete in the annual Caribbean Cycling Championships.

The inform Greaves, winner of 14 local events as well as three races in the USA, will team up with Jeffrey, last year’s senior road race champion, Orville Hinds, USA-based Geron Williams and Godfrey Pollydore on a quest to secure individual and team honours for Guyana when the event pedals off on Saturday.

After the time trials on Saturday (Women 20km), Men 40km (2laps) the road race will be staged on Sunday (Women  10 Laps – 71km, Men 18 Laps-128km (80miles).
The formidable five-man unit was chosen by the selection committee of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF).

Executive member of the GCF, Brian Allen will act as manager while former national rider, Dwayne ‘Road Hog’ Gibbs, who is now the federation’s coach will take up the coaching duties.

National female road race champion, Naomi Singh, Hazina Barrett and UK based, Claire Fraser-Green will also compete in Curacao

Allen told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he expects the team of riders “To ride at a high level in Curacao.”

However, Allen also wrote in a press release that:“Team Guyana is experiencing challenges to get bikes to Curacao.

“We were advised by LIAT to send bikes up front to avoid any complications on the Trinidad to Curacao leg but after delivering the bikes to LIAT on Tuesday (which entailed depriving the team members from training for three days), we were informed late Tuesday evening that the flight scheduled to take the bikes had been cancelled because of some problem with the aircraft, and we should make arrangements to collect the bikes from the airport.”
