Doubles tennis tournament for next Thursday

The 2013 Trophy Stall Doubles Tennis Tournament will commence on Thursday November 28 at the National Park and Non Pariel racquet facilities.

Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) Assistant Committee member Keimo Benjamin stated that the tournament was delayed due to clashes with other tournament commitments overseas and now that has been rectified, the tournament will be one of the largest in the country.

Receiving the symbolic trophy from Devi Sunich on behalf of the Trophy Stall, Benjamin stated that the event which is in its fourth year was always welcomed by the GLTA as part of its calendar of events because it has contributed to an increased number of players in the doubles categories.

He noted that competition caters to individuals who are not comfortable playing singles competitively but prefer doubles, which is more tactical but less demanding.

He said that the GLTA continues to emphasise on investment in the sport’s development and urges more players to participate and put on their best performance while having fun. He also noted that students should also take the sport of tennis seriously so that they can be well rounded athletes.

Devi Sunich, wife of proprietor Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall said, “The business has received tremendous support from the tennis fraternity for many years and that this was our way of giving back to the sport to help to create opportunities for greater participation and development.”

Defending men’s doubles champions Jason Andrews and Anthony Downes are expected to face stiff competition especially from their biggest rivals Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis.

Entry forms, which have been available through coaches Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan (642-5672) and Leyland Leacock (660-4011) should be submitted no later than November 25.
