Balram memorial volleyball tourney…PMTC 1 beat MM Jags

Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC 1) on Sunday continued their winning streak for the third consecutive year, beating the Port Mourant Jaguars in the finals of the 3rd Annual Shane Balram Memorial Volleyball Competition played at the Albion Sports Complex Volleyball Court in Berbice.

Playing on a “round-robin basis”, the competition was organized by the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) in memory of Shane Balram of Rose Hall Town.

The teams battled in intense heat in the preliminary rounds which were played on a “2 best of 3” series. On completion of these rounds, eventual winners PMTC 1 and Port Mourant Jaguars spiked it off in the final played on a “3 best of 5” series.

Ian Bagot, Trevor McRae, Quacy Matheson and Jason Seelochan were in brilliant form for PMTC 1, easily brushing aside PM Jags in straight sets: 21-16, 25-16, and 25-20, despite good plays from Jags; Buddy Motiepersaud, Javed Motiepersaud and Safraz Hussain.

At the presentation ceremony Deonarine Balram, the son of the deceased, presented PMTC 1 captain Seelochan with the Shane Balram Memorial Volleyball Trophy and $25,000. PM Jags received $15,000.  The other two contesting teams also received cash incentives.

 

Balram said he was pleased to be assisting in the promotion of volleyball and urged all of the players to maintain high standards in volleyball in Berbice. He also pledged to continue to assist the clubs with financing.

Meanwhile, BVA President Gregory Rambarran called on the clubs to be punctual and to assist in officiating the competition.

At the ceremony, one minute of silence was also observed in Shane’s memory.
