GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup continues today

The Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Knockout Cup continues today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda with a doubleheader.

In the feature contest at 8pm, losing 2012 finalist Riddim Squad FC led by their tandem of brothers: the Ramsays, Hopes and Stewarts, will battle Mahaica Determinators led by Delon Charles, Sherwin Hermonstine and Azuma Roberts in what is expected to be a competitive engagement.

In an invited comment, Lloyd Millington, coach of the Mocha based side told Stabroek Sport that preparation is ongoing despite setbacks due to the weather.

“A lot of our players putting in their own personal training other than the normal team sessions….While we got a couple of players who are not 100%, we are still expecting a victory. We need the win and our players realize it as well. We know they are a hardworking team but we will have to work harder,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mahaica Determinators coach Peter Gulliver in a pre-match comment said, “Team training is up to date and we got a high expectation of winning through the hard work. We are very motivated to win and very confident. The margin of victory could be 2-0 but we’re coming for the victory.”

The opening match up at 6pm will pit the Guyana Defence Force led by the trio of Eusi Phillips, Delwyn Fraser and Royan Morrison against the relatively unknown Linden side Botofago and their trio of Jayshaun Moore, Trevon Archibald and Orlando Thormon.

“We have been working on a lot of the technical aspect with the team. We have also been doing speed-strength training to enable us at times in the game to play at different pace,” Denzil Thompson, coach of the army side said. “I expect my team to go out there with a positive mindset and stick to the match conception of what we are planning and expect to do.”

Collin Moore, President of Botofago FC in a brief comment said, “We didn’t have the preparation we would have wanted because most of our players were preparing for Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations….However we got the talent, heart, courage and we believe in ourselves and will go out there to put on a good show. We will try [to] enjoy ourselves and have fun and show the public at large what we are capable of.”
