BV ’triumphs’ over GFC with 2-0 win

Beterverwagting (BV)/Triumph United edged the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 2-0 when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Knockout Cup continued on Friday at the Buxton Community ground on the East Coast Demerara.

Akin Curry opened the scoring for the East Coast side in the 27th minute with a strike from the left side of the penalty area to the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

Curry almost made it 2-0 in the 34th minute as his right-footed strike from the left side of the penalty box came crashing off the crossbar, much to the relief of the GFC custodian.

Guilty of overplaying the ball inside their opponent’s final third, GFC fashioned their best opportunity of the half in the 39th minute, with Shad Fernandes hammering his right-footed free kick from the right side of the park narrowly wide of the right post.

Getting the better of the exchanges, BV/Triumph once again almost doubled their advantage in the 43rd minute through a Delroy Dean 23-yard free kick. But this was acrobatically saved by the GFC custodian low to his right.

The crossbar once again came to the aid of the GFC backline in the 55th minute of the second period, as a Shane Garnett strike from inside the centre of the box, following a poorly defended left-sided corner kick, came cannoning off the woodwork.

Continuing to find it difficult to create opportunities, GFC missed an opportunity to level the score line in the 79th minute through Stephen Wilson.

Running towards the left side of the penalty box to collect a right-sided cross, Wilson had the entire goal open to him. Instead, he fired his effort from nine yards out wide of the mark

The outcome was finally put to bed in the 90th+1 minute of added time as Dean netted from the penalty spot to the left-hand corner following a rash challenge inside the 18-yard box by the GFC custodian.

In the second matchup, home side Buxton United brushed aside Seawall FC by an identical score line compliments of a Michael Phyll double in the 17th and 78th minutes.
