GFA/Banks Beer Knockout Cup continues today with a doubleheader

An exciting doubleheader will be on display when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Knockout Cup round of 16 matches continues today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in Bourda.

In the featured contest at 8.00pm, defending champion Sunburst Camptown FC will face off with the Rawle Gittens

and Rene Gibbons led Linden side Winners Connection, in what promises to be an open contest.

Having crushed a below-par Essequibo team by a 10-0 score line in the event’s opening fixture, the Campbellville team marshalled by the trio of Devon Forde, Oswald Cornette and Malcolm Wilson will attempt to seal their quarterfinal’s berth come opening whistle.

Buoyed by their recent dismissal of the Police by a 2-1 margin in their opener, Winners Connection are hoping to be true to their name as they aim to eliminate the event’s number one seeded team.

Joseph Wilson, Camptown’s coach in a pre-match comment said, “We trying with what is available in terms of the weather and facilities. Remember we are Camptown, we always operate in a fighting and committed way and the players are committed and prepared to give a 110%.”

Having eliminated last year’s finalist Riddim Squad 5-4 via sudden death kicks in their opening matchup, Mahaica Determinators will look to fashion another major upset when they oppose Den Amstel Porknockers in the opening fixture at 6.00pm. aving defeated Den Amstel 2-1 in their earlier Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Premier league matchup, Mahaica led by the duo of Azuma Roberts and Terry Caesar, will fancy their chances of a repeating their earlier success when the battle commences. Inspired by the return of their favourite son Trayon Bobb, the West Demerara side will be desperate to reverse the previous outcome and will rely on the attacking trio of Delon Lanferman, Andre Hector and Bobb, when the opening whistle sounds.

Den Amstel’s coach, O’Neil Heywood in a pre-match comment said, “Right now the team is solid and looking to go out and win. They beat us before so they will come confident. We just have to be the better team and play the football we know so we can win.”

Heywood however added, “The expectation is that the weather conditions will be normal because once the field is wet, I don’t get as much out of my team. The better team on the day will win.”

 

Peter Gulliver, Mahaica Determinators’ coach in an invited comment said, “Everything is going gradually and we are doing the necessary preparation. We are confident we can do it again. We got a lot of confidence from our first win against Riddim Squad.”

Gulliver added, “We are going to try and take care and sure we score every chance we get. They will use this game to try and get revenge. We will not be taking them lightly because we beat them before, we know they can handle themselves.”
