Preparing for birth (Whelping)

I have always advocated that bitches should give birth to their offspring in an environment (human ‘family,’ yard/house, etc) in which they feel comfortable and secure, and with which they are acquainted.  This means that even when several families occupy the same yard space, we should try to ensure that the pregnant dog gives birth in an area of closest proximity (even in the house) to her caregivers.  If the surroundings are strange (even if it is the immediate neighbour’s yard), then she might hold back her delivery – a reaction which could have negative consequences.

Also, you should choose the area in which you would wish the bitch to give birth long before the actual day of parturition.  The actual location should be draft free, and well covered and protected from
