Dance fair set for tomorrow

The National Dance Company will be hosting a dance fair and street performance at the National Park Tarmac, tomorrow from 13:00 hrs to 19:00 hrs in celebration of International Dance Day.

International Dance Day was introduced on April 29, 1982 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to honour the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre who is regarded as the father of modern ballet.

According to the International Dance Council (IDC), the intention of International Dance Day is to unite the field of dance by celebrating the art form and reveling in its universality, to cross all political, cultural, and ethnic barriers and bring people together in peace and friendship with a common language – dance.

2009 saw the formation of the International Dance Day committee of Guyana and since then they have held dance shows, outreach programs to schools and the public, award ceremonies, workshops and seminars for secondary schools. Current members of the committee are: Clive Prowell and John Reman of the Classique Dance Company, Shirley Inniss and La Vonne George from the Unit of Allied Arts (UAA), Georgia Harry – a former dancer of the Ballet de Camaguey and Vivienne Daniels of the National Dance Company.

Director of the National Dance Company and coordinator of the event, Vivienne Daniels told Stabroek News that the event is one to enjoy and it is the initiative of the Dance Company to promote dance in all its forms throughout the country.
