Welcome to Guyana

Welcome ‘Summer’ vacationers: members of the Diaspora and the average Guyanese who wants to explore the lost wonder of the world known as Guyana. Close your eyes and let us pretend that we have never heard of this land before, now slowly open them…

20130713boxAllow me to take this time to welcome you. I know you may not be able to experience all 83,000 square miles of exhilarating adventure but trust me when I say your time with us will be well spent, no matter where you are or who you’re with!

Staying in Georgetown? Well enjoy this ‘Oz of the Caribbean’ for its colourful and friendly people; buzzing city life; multicultural heritage; wide open spaces; shopping districts and my! my! my! The food! The food in Guyana will give you that zing you have been looking for in Caribbean flavours. There are so many restaurants in Georgetown; the biggest difficulty is where to eat.

Watch how the Camp and Regent streets junction transforms to our very own ‘Times Square’. Sheriff Street will wow you as Guyana’s own ‘Las Vegas Strip’ where night life is as bright as the building themselves.

Watch your step, development is rapid in this city so keep up!

Or you might just be here to relax. Sunsets on the seawalls can be romantic and the Promenade Gardens are just enchanting.

Want history? Look no further! This 200-year-old city has history, culture and heritage; from the numerous canals that make you think you are in Amsterdam to the Colonial buildings that will have you wondering if you went back in time.

Come on! You’re looking for a sparkling beach?! Don’t all the Caribbean islands you passed on your way here have practically the same sand, sun and water? Live a little and try our mysterious brown water off the Corentyne beaches in Berbice; the dazzling water of Shell Beach in the North-West where Giant Marine turtles like the protected Hawksbill and Leatherback nest. Don’t get me started with the countless tropical resorts and creeks in Guyana. But nothing comes more wondrous to swimming than Orinduik Falls! The cascading falls over jade rocks are a natural spring of refreshing splendour.

People will tell you the true beauty of Guyana lies in its interior and they are not lying.

The black and blue creeks in the Hilly, Sand and Clay Region; the thick, luscious, tropical rainforest with its range of flora and fauna: many species rare and unknown to the world, found only here. The Pakaraima Mountains which make up the Guiana Shield; Mount Roraima which is not only the highest point of this great land, but also the most inspiring and famous table top mountain in the world. It is said by the native Amerindians that the structure is the fallen trunk of a great tree that bore all the fruits of the world and trust me; Guyana has the most delicious tropical fruits in the world.

The mighty Kaieteur Falls will both scare you and inspire you. And so will the Iwokrama Forest Reserve and its Canopy walkway and the Rupununi Savannah that kneels before the Kanuku Mountains, known as the mountains of life for their spectacular diversity.

The mountains and surrounding savannahs are called Land of the Giants. Why? Because it’s home to the Harpy Eagle – largest bird of prey in the Americas; the Giant Anteater – largest of its kind in the world; the Black Caiman – largest in the Americas; the Arapaima – largest freshwater fish in the world; the Jaguar – largest cat in the Americas and even has giant anthills to conclude the long list of giants.

But no matter where you go in Guyana, there is one universal fact that you will be happy to experience: the people are the most hospitable, enduring and friendliest in the Caribbean and possibly the world!

Now it’s time for you to rediscover this lost land, Welcome.
