Swordtail Bromeliad

20131020peggyVriesa splendens commonly called Swordtail or Flaming Sword comes from the bromeliad family and originated from Venezuela and the Guianas where it grows in trees in the rainforest.  It was later introduced to Europe in 1840 and was named after a Dutch botanist.  It has been sighted in our forest in Guyana.

Vriesa splendens is one of the most dramatic bromeliad species with its vibrant leaf colours which make it a unique focal point even when it is not in bloom.  The bracts or leaves are banded green and brown in colour, almost looking like camouflage.  It is quite an attractive pattern to look at.

20140309swordtailVriesa splendens is a fine majestic potted plant.  Its exotic feature is the erect brilliant Red Swordtail flowerhead with tiny yellow flowers that emanate from the centre bracts or urn.

Make sure that the urn has some water in it as the plant will feed on this, and remember to change the water weekly by tilting it so that it can run off.  Keep the soil moist by misting it twice per week and fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once every two weeks.  It likes bright light, but not direct sunlight, so if planted outdoors make sure that it is planted in semi-shade.  The pups will take approximately three to four years to flower.

Until next week, happy gardening!
