The amazing Gladioli

The most amazing Gladioli corms (bulbs) are available on the market now.

Gladiolus (plural Gladioli) commonly called Sword Lily, gets it name from the Latin word gladius which means sword, referring to the shape of the leaves. Gladiolus comes from the bulb family and the bulbs are referred to as corms.

Gladioli are native to Mediterranean areas and South Africa. If you could gather all the Gladioli from these areas your giant bouquet would include approximately 200-250 different species. However, most of the Gladioli we grow in our gardens are hybrids which have been hybridised extensively for over 100 years.

in the gardenPlant Gladioli corms in a rich sandy soil (one part being rich loam) in full sun. Set corm at least 4-6 inches deep in the soil and press down firmly. Spread the corms 3-4 inches apart from each other. Do not overcrowd them. Water lightly. Fertilize with Blue Granules or Osmocote Slow Release Plant Food once per month.

Plants will take at least two months to flower. They produce large spikes of flowers which may need to be staked. These flowers are beautiful and vibrant. Gladioli are rated as a top-ranking cut flower and are great in floral arrangements and landscaping. The flowers are prized for being long lasting and easy to arrange.

The most popular Gladioli are the large-flowered hybrids and Red Majesty. Gladioli are available on the local market in colours of scarlet red, orange, yellow, pink, white and fuschia. So plant a few Gladioli bulbs, they are easy to grow and you will enjoy the long lasting flowers.

Until next week, happy gardening!
