Son jailed for threatening, cursing mother

Yogeshwarlall Hardeo received a 12-month-prison sentence and a reminder to honour his parents after he pleaded guilty yesterday to threatening and cursing his mother.

Hardeo was sentenced to six months on charges of using threatening language and abusive language to his mother when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts complex. The sentences are to run consecutively. According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, Hardeo, on January 5 at 213 Barr Street, Kitty, used threatening language to his mother. Also, on the day in question, Hardeo used abusive language at his mother.

It was reported that after Hardeo’s mother refused to give him $7,000, he became enraged and cursed and threatened the woman. The distraught mother explained to the court that her son is in the habit of requesting money frequently. She added that she was in debt to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Before sentencing Hardeo, Magistrate Latchman quoted Exodus 20:12, which states “Honour thy father and mother that thy days will be long upon the earth.” and noted the increase of domestic violence in Guyana over the years.
