Man fined $15, 000 for threatening to kill brother

A man who threatened to chop his brother to death with a cutlass, forcing him to jump into a trench to escape, was yesterday fined $15,000 or a week in jail if he is unable to pay the fine.

Sugrim Bijadhar of Airy Hall appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce yesterday at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court charged with threatening behaviour.

It is alleged that on June 1, 2013, at Airy Hall Backdam, Bijadhar made use of threatening behaviour to his brother Chamish Narine.

Bijadhar had appeared before Magistrate Scarce on June 13, 2013 at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court and a trial was conducted before the said magistrate.

According to the facts, on the day in question at Airy Hall Backdam, Bijadhar threatened to kill his brother with a cutlass. In an attempt to save himself, Narine jumped into a trench.

Magistrate Scarce, on handing down the guilty sentence to Bijadhar, said that he rejected the version of the defendant and believed that of the VC.

Bijadhar’s lawyer asked the court for leniency stating that her client is a preacher and a farmer and is also sickly.

He was subsequently fined $15,000 or one week in jail.

When asked by the magistrate if he had the money to pay, Bijadhar said no and appeared to be on the verge of tears as he went to sit on the prisoners’ bench.
