Stabroek Market burglar gets 12 months for stealing powdered milk

A twenty-two year man was yesterday found guilty of stealing $180,000 worth of milk powder, for which he will spend the next year in prison.

Anand Rameshwar, of 257 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, had initially pleaded guilty at his arraignment on December 5, 2013 on two charges. The first charged was that between November 30, 2013 and December 1, he broke and entered a stall in the Stabroek Market and stole five bags of full cream milk powder, which was the property of Gavin Paul.

According to the second charge, Rameshwar, between the same dates in question, broke and entered the stall of Shamsundar Raghubir with the intent to commit a felony.

It was revealed in court that five of the 17 bags of milk powder were stolen from Paul’s stall. After the theft, Rameshwar was found in the market on December 1, 2013 and tried to escape capture from police officers. He was, however, apprehended.

Based on the evidence submitted by the prosecution, led by Jomo Nichols, Rameshwar was found guilty of the crimes.

Fortunately for the man, Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond took his age, clean record and other factors into consideration before sentencing him to12 months for each of the charges, with the sentences running concurrently.
