No bail for miner accused of stealing motorbike

A Linden miner, facing a simple larceny charge for a second time, was remanded to prison when he appeared in the city courts yesterday on a charge that he stole a motorcycle.

Twenty-five-year-old Peter Giddings of 53 Old England Mines, Linden pleaded not guilty to the charge that he stole a $280,000 motorcycle between January 27 and the following day at 111 Mile Mahdia, Potaro River.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, Giddings and the virtual complainant Robin Hinds, a businessman and owner of a mechanic shop at 111 Mile Mahdia, are known to each other. On January 27, at about 20:10 hrs, Dexter Hall, employed at the mechanic shop, secured the business with all of its property intact and went home to retire to bed. The motorcycle, CE 771, was also secured by Hall.

Grant said that on the following day, at about 06:25 hrs, Hall went to work and discovered the vehicle missing. He reported the theft and information received led to the Giddings’ arrest.

According to Grant, Giddings admitted to removing the motorcycle; however, the man refused to give a statement. The bike was subsequently recovered.

When asked by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry if he had had previous brushes with the law, Giddings admitted that he had been found guilty of a simple larceny charge about three years ago. He was subsequently remanded to prison and is set to appear next at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for statements on April 14.
