Deeds Registry worker accused of $4M land fraud

An employee of the Deeds Registry was on Wednesday accused of defrauding a woman of $4M for a plot of land.

Bibi Sattaur, 56, of Lot 8 Station Street, Kitty, was accused of obtaining from Bibi Akleema Goberbhan $4M cash by pretending to transfer a plot of land to the woman. According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, the crime was committed on March 28, 2013 in Georgetown. The facts, he said, were as charged.

In a bail application, Sattaur’s lawyer Leslie Sobers denied any agreement between his client and the virtual complainant. After asking for reasonable bail, he said that his client is “shocked and amazed” at the allegations.

Prosecutor Grant did not raise any objections to the woman’s bail; hence, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry set bail at $200,000 with the condition that Sattaur report to the police every Friday at 4 PM. She is set to appear in court again on March 10 for reports and fixtures.
