Members of the Task Force on Fuel Smuggling and Contraband on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the use of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Floating Patrol Base, which is located in the Pomeroon River.
The signatories to the MOU were GDF Deputy Chief-of-Staff Khemraj Persaud, Commissioner of Police Leroy Brumell, Commissioner-General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Khurshid Sattaur, Head of the Customs-Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) James Singh and Head of the Guyana Energy Agency Dr. Mahender Sharma, according to a Government Information Agency (GINA) report.
Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee and Head of the Taskforce on Narcotic Drugs and Illicit Weapons Michael Atherley
were both present at the signing.
Rohee, who is Chairman of the Task Force, was reported as saying that the MOU strengthens cooperation. He said much has been achieved through the task force and the signing was a step to take collaboration further.
Rohee also announced that the Guyana Police Force would soon be launching a floating base in a similar strategic location.
According to GINA, the MOU details the procedures and guidelines by which the signing agencies shall use the floating base when conducting joint operations that are consistent with the goals, missions and objectives of all members of the Task Force on Fuel smuggling and Contraband. The responsibilities for the floating patrol base would be shared equally by the agencies, it also revealed.
