A former clerk attached to a city drug store was yesterday accused of embezzling over $1M from his former employer.
Raphael Larry appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on four counts of embezzlement, which he denied.
It is the police’s case that he committed the crimes between 2011 and 2012, allegedly embezzling sums amounting to $885041, $393,296, $14,320 and $5446, from the Bacchus Drug Store.
Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that Larry was employed to distribute drugs to various individuals by the drug store. However, Grant said Larry never handed over the proceeds to his employer.
Grant called for Larry to be remanded, stating that he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before on similar charges and other charges may be laid against him.
But the Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry set bail after she received an affirmative response after inquiring from the police if Larry had voluntarily attended court. She set bail at $150,000 bail for the $885,041 embezzlement charge and $75,000 bail each for the other three charges.
The case was adjourned until March 3, 2014, when statements are expected to be filed.
