Three former Muneshwers Limited workers were yesterday accused of embezzling nearly $60M in total from the company.
The three women, Sabrina Rohamat, Bibi Tuhida Ali and Bibi Shiroon Ali, were previously charged in January with embezzling over half a million dollars from the company.
They all denied the charges when they were read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Bibi Shiroon Ali was accused of embezzling $470,000 between July 11, 2013 and October 3, 2013 while being employed as a clerk with Muneshwers Limited, while Rohamat was accused of embezzling nearly $53M from the company between January 5, 2012 and February 19, 2013. Bibi Tuhida Ali was accused of embezzling the sum of $6.4M between August 18, 2012 and April 13, 2013.
Earlier this year, the women had been placed on $150,000 on the earlier embezzlement charges after their attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes made applications in their favour.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru had previously objected to the women’s bail, citing the likelihood of their fleeing the jurisdiction as his reason.
However, Hughes stated that his clients had consistently gone to the police station when asked. Hughes further added that some of the alleged dates were public holidays and he therefore impossible for them to commit the crimes since they were not working on those days.
This time around, Mangru raised no objections and the women were each granted bail in the sum of $100,000. March 14 is their next court date.
