Bail for man accused of assaulting wife over broken plate

Magistrate Sunil Scarce yesterday granted $45, 000 bail to a 21-year-old carpenter charged with assaulting and threatening his wife.

The Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court heard that on February 24, at the Charity Housing Scheme, Marlon Benn unlawfully assaulted his wife Darmadai Benn at their residence.

Benn pleaded guilty with an explanation to both charges and after telling the court his side of the story, a not guilty plea was recorded. He told the court that he went to a shop to make a purchase and met his uncle and they drank a few beers. When he returned home he asked his wife why a plate was broken and although she didn’t respond to him he never hit or threatened her.

Police told the court that Benn became angry after his wife did not respond and dealt her several slaps about her body and later threatened her. Prosecutor Khrisnadatt Ramana did not object to bail.

Bail was set in the sum of $25,000 on the assault charge and $20,000 for the offence of using threatening language. Benn was ordered to appear in the Charity Magistrate’s Court on March 24.
