Labourer on bail after denying Mahdia burglary

A labourer is now on bail after denying a charge that he broke and entered a home at Mahdia and stole over $350,000 worth of items.

According to the charge against him, Elton Calder broke and entered a home between February 12 and February 17 and stole a laptop valued at $180,000, a Sony camera valued at $25,000 and two gold rings valued at $150,000.

Calder, 19, pleaded not guilty when the allegations were read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, the facts were as charged.

Paul Fung-a-Fat, the man’s attorney-at-law, asked for reasonable bail. He stated that his client had no previous trouble with the law.

He further added that none of the articles mentioned had been found on Calder.

Prosecutor Grant raised no objections to bail and Calder was subsequently granted a bail release in the sum of $200,000 on the condition that he report every Friday at 3 PM to the Mahdia Police Station.

He will make his next appearance on April 14 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
