The policeman who was guarding Dexroy Brown, who escaped from the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Monday while under police guard, is under close arrest.
Brown remained at-large yesterday, according to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, who also confirmed that the rank was under close arrest. He added that an arrest warrant was issued by the court for Brown and not a wanted bulletin as was reported in some sections of the media.
Brown was shot by police last week while trying to escape after he and another man, David Bernard, were allegedly nabbed with guns and ammunition during a police search in Sophia. Bernard, of West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, pleaded not guilty when charges of illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and a 138 snub-nosed revolver as well as a live round of 9mm ammunition and six live rounds of .38 ammunition were read on Monday. He was subsequently remanded to prison while a warrant was issued for Brown’s arrest.
Brown is the third prisoner to have escaped while under police guard at the GPH in recent months. A source at the hospital yesterday said that the escape was a well-executed one. “There seems to have been some collusion between Brown and someone else because he was able to get out of the hospital despite the fact that he had both of his legs shot,” the source noted. It is still not clear if at the time of his escape, Brown was shackled to the bed.
