Miner sentenced for assault, other matters after changing plea to guilty

A miner will be a guest of the state for the next twenty-seven months, after he changed his initial not guilty plea to 10 charges including resisting arrest, assaulting and using abusive and indecent language on police officers, and assault meted out to his partner.

According to Prosecutor Jomo Nichols, Orlando Grumble, 39, of 207 Alexander Street, Lacytown and Karen Bender live in the same area and shared a relationship.

Grumble admitted that on February 19 at Charlotte Street, he had assaulted and verbally abused Bender. He also accepted that he had resisted arrest by Police Constable 21146 Hodge, during which he had assaulted and verbally abused the officer at Alexander Street

on March 13. Again he accepted that he had used expletives on Constable Jonnel Shepherd and he had further assaulted, verbally abused and threatened Bender on March 13, at Regent Street. Nichols also said that Grumble had behaved disorderly on the same day.

Subsequently Grumble was detained, taken to the Brickdam Police Station, where he was charged.

The court also heard from Grumble that he had been previously jailed in 2006 for the offence of robbery.

Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond after stating that she had considered the breach of the restraining order against Grumble, along with all other factors, and the prevalence of violence against women, sentenced the defendant.

He received a sentence of three months each for the 10 charges. However for the two assault charges against Bender, Grumble will serve three months each concurrently, while for the other 8 charges he will be serving three months each consecutively. Those charges include the assault of Constable Hodge, three for abusive language on Hodge and Bender, the threatening language on Bender, the indecent language on Constable Shepherd, disorderly behaviour and resisting the lawful arrest by Constable Hodge.
