First female Surinamese captain to pilot jet today

History will be made for Surinam today when its first female jet captain will pilot the Surinam Airways flight bound for Miami, Florida. A press release issued by Surinam Airways attested to Astrid Deira’s abilities with assurance that Deira is fully licensed and qualified to make the journey from Paramaribo to Miami with a stop in Georgetown en route.

Surinam Airways invites the public to be a part of this historical event at a special reception with the pilot at the Airport Executive lounge at Cheddi Jagan International Airport at 8.45 am today.

Deira, who was very impressed with Guyana on her previous visit last October, is looking forward to meet the members of the public, the release said.

The accomplished pilot has the distinction of being Surinam Airways’ first female jet pilot. Before being promoted to Captain, she previously flew as First Officer of the Airbus A340-311 on the Suriname to Amsterdam route for several years.
