Lawyer made to apologise for donkey remark in court

The Anna Regina Magistrates Court was disrupted last Tuesday after a minor dispute involving a counsellor and the Court’s prosecutor.

Police Prosecutor Krishnadatt Ramana was in the process of questioning a witness when the lawyer of the defendant Mr Bacchus (only name given) exclaimed that the prosecutor was “behaving like a donkey in court.”

Bacchus stated that Ramana was leading the witness and trying to help him tell his story.

Ramana then strongly objected to the statement made by Bacchus, who was asked to retract his statement by Magistrate Sunil Scarce, which he did. The prosecutor asked for a personal apology then excused himself from the courtroom.

Magistrate Scarce then reprimanded Bacchus. “It is unbecoming that a counsellor of your experience would tell a prosecutor that he is behaving like a donkey in court,” the magistrate said. He further asked Bacchus to personally apologize to prosecutor Ramana before the end of the court session. Bacchus agreed and he apologized to Krishnadatt Ramana who was summoned to the courtroom by the Magistrate.  The court was then dismissed until after the lunch break.
