Abuser fined; tells court wife ‘does see things’

A 44-year-old mechanic of Anna Regina who claimed his wife “does see things” after he was charged with physically abusing and threatening to kill her was on Tuesday found guilty and fined $20,000 or an alternative of two weeks in jail.

Joordyal Rajpat had first appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on April 7 charged with unlawfully assaulting and using threatening language to Kamla Singh, his reputed wife of five years.

He had pleaded not guilty to both charges and was granted $15,000 bail on the threatening language charge and another $20,000 on the assault charge.

It was alleged that he had assaulted Singh after she asked him to turn down the music and later threatened to kill her.

The man who was not represented, appeared before Magistrate Scarce when the case was called again on Tuesday and he maintained his not guilty plea.

Singh gave evidence against him and later when he was allowed to speak, Rajpat told the court, “This woman is a diabetic and she does see things. I never do them things that she say.”

He also begged for leniency since according to him he has moved out from the house.

After considering the matter, the magistrate imposed the fine.
