The Nadira and Indranie Shah Dance Troup is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the arrival of Indians to Guyana with the dance extravaganza Nrityageet 35 over the weekend.

In a press release the troupe said this year’s presentation will feature a fusion of Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Folk and popular Chutney, Soca and Guyanese roots-based influences which promises to “wow and educate” the audience.

“New dancers are joining all the time learning and exploring the world of dance, learning from the greatest while adding their flair for the modern and different,” director of the troupe Dr Seeta Shah Roath said. Nadira Shah Berry, Suzanne Shah Nilsson and Rewattie Datt DaCosta are currently training new dancers in traditional and modern styles even as they explore new trends and create new experiences, she said.

“We are exploring futuristic dance theatre with ballet and modern dancers blending with influences of traditional styles with the best dances in Guyana exploring new frontiers in the art form,” the director said.

This year’s production will be held at the National Cultural Centre on May 3 and 4 from 8pm. Tickets costs $700, $1000, $2000 and $3000. A children’s matinee show is set for Friday at 1pm.
