Letter campaign urges Stevedore residents to vote for PPP/C

An open letter seeking votes for the ruling PPP/C has been sent to residents of the Stevedore Housing Scheme.

“VOTE FOR GUYANA!!! VOTE FOR YOUR FAMILY!!! VOTE FOR THE PPP/C!!!” an unsigned letter, sent to residents of the community, urges.

The unsigned letter, Stabroek News was told, was distributed to residents of the community by hand. It is unclear whether its dissemination is intended as an official signal of plans for impending polls as the PPP/C continues to resist calls for the holding of delayed local government elections, while it has been non-committal about calling for general elections despite its ongoing struggles with with the opposition, which has a one-seat majority in the National Assembly.

The letter, seen by this newspaper, credits the PPP/C with continuing to steer the economy in the right direction and investing hundreds of millions in key social sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, housing and water, drainage and irrigation, and agriculture.

In addition to trumpeting gains in education, healthcare and agriculture, it also says that since the 2011 general elections the PPP/C administration has distributed more than 12,000 new house lots “so that Guyanese can have their own home.”

“Without a doubt, the works of the PPP/C government have had a significant impact on your life. For the first time in your life, you are the legal owner of a plot of land. Now you could achieve the dream of you and your family that is, owning your own home and not having to rent or beg lodging,” it states.

“Today, you have been able to achieve what maybe your parents could have only dreamed about—home ownership. The PPP/C Government has made your dream come through and your family can now live happily together,” it adds.

The letter cautions against “any effort aimed at stymieing and delaying the development” of the country. “We must work together to ensure that the PPP/C remains in office so that our dream for a prosperous and economically viable Guyana can be realized,” it implores, saying this was necessary to securing “our children’s future,” “our family’s welfare” and the welfare of the country on a path of progress.

“I implore you to join in giving the PPP/C your full support as we seek to build a united and viable Guyana. We owe it to ourselves and the future generations. We owe this to our conscience. The PPP/C remains committed to you and your family. In return, I humbly request your support and commitment to the PPP/C,” it adds.
