A pensioner, accused of stabbing another man during a heated argument over “sexual activities,” was placed on bail after explaining that he had gotten violent after being attacked himself.
Seeraj Sookraj, a security guard from Agricola, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and admitted that he had, on May 1, in Georgetown, maliciously wounded Stanley Persaud.
According to Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, on the date in question at about 16:45 hrs, the men had been drinking some beers at a stand on Brickdam and Cornhill Streets when an argument ensued over sexual activities. The accused, Mangru said, became annoyed, pulled out a knife and dealt Persaud a stab to the chest area. The man then walked away.
An injured Persaud ran to the Stabroek Market Outpost and made a report. Sookraj was subsequently arrested and charged.
When given an opportunity to speak, Sookraj explained that he had been on his way to work when he stopped at the stand to buy a beer. Persaud, he said, was there and called out to him, saying that he knew him.
Persaud then proceeded to call him a multitude of offensive names and the verbal attacks were soon followed by a physical one, Sookraj explained. According to the defendant, Persaud hit him to the head with a bottle and, in retaliation, he drew his knife and stabbed the man.
After his explanation, a not guilty plea was recorded by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry.
Prosecutor Mangru raised no objections to the man’s bail and he was granted it in the sum of $50,000. He will return on May 30.
